AmeriCheer Celebrates 20 Years of Memories & Magic at InterNationals
Friday, April 4, 2014

Westerville, OH - AmeriCheer, Inc. hosted teams from across the globe to celebrate 20 years of memories and magic at their 2014 InterNational Championship held at Walt Disney World® Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on March 22nd and 23rd.

The event weekend kicked off Thursday and Friday, March 20th and 21st, with the AmeriCheer staff welcoming teams from Columbia, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Venezuela into their Memories & Magic tent with music, games, and photo opportunities.  Teams were encouraged to fill out their ‘InterNational Passport’ by meeting competitors from other teams, posting their favorite InterNational memory, and completing other fun activities geared towards making their experience more memorable.  “We not only wanted competitors to go home with fond memories of our competition, we wanted them to take home memories of their entire experience at InterNationals and Walt Disney World,” commented Rachael Montunnas, Event Planning & Customer Relations Associate.  “We thought creating this ‘InterNational Passport’ would be a fun and interactive way for them (competitors, coaches, and families) to make a friend, create a memory, and share their InterNationals experience with us through social media.”

The competition commenced Saturday with the dance portion in the morning.  AmeriCheer & AmeriDance’s Dreams Come True contest winner, Moon Area High School Dance Team (Coraopolis, PA), took home an InterNational Championship placement in the small varsity hip hop division.  “If it wasn't for the winning the Dreams Come True contest, we would never had been able to attend InterNationals.  We have attended national competitions before, but this competition was well planned, well put together, well organized, and made everyone feel good.  The team had so much fun meeting other teams and taking pictures with new friends. When they showed our Dreams Come True video submission at the awards ceremony, it brought tears to our eyes - we were so proud and then to be featured on screen for AmeriCheer’s I AM campaign – that made our day!  Our dreams DID come true at Internationals 2014!” Patty Langer, Moon Area Dance Team Coach.  Moon Area was one of four organizations to win $5,000 towards competing at the 2014 InterNational Championship through the Dreams ComeTrue campaign.

'Every year, the dance portion of our InterNationals gets bigger and better and I am continually amazed by the talent that performs here each year,” reflected Jaimee Montgomery, Dance Manager.  “The athletes are the reason why we do what we do at AmeriDance and if they’ve had a great time, we’ve done our job.”

The cheer portion of the competition began Saturday afternoon and continued through Sunday.  At the final awards ceremony, AmeriCheer and Cheer Professional Magazine recognized 20 coaches and awarded the 2014 Coach of the Year award to Amy Faulkner of Northstar Studios in Sunbury, Ohio.  “To commemorate 20 years of InterNationals at Walt Disney World Resort, we honored 20 deserving coaches and inducted them into our VIP Coaches Club.  All of the nominees deserved to be named Coach of the Year and we had a difficult time deciding who would take home this honor.  Amy’s leadership for all of her teams not only exemplifies her dedication to the sport and spirit of cheerleading, but to the molding and shaping of young people into productive, good citizens.  It was those attributes that solidified our decision,” stated AmeriCheer & AmeriDance President, Elizabeth Rossetti.

Other special awards included the Independent Event Producers (IEP) i-Award, presented to Brenda Elmore of UrsulineAcademy (Cincinnati, OH) for her organization’s integrity, enthusiasm, and passion for those in the cheerleading and dance industry.  The Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Chuck Palumbo of G.T.G.A.A. Wildcats (Blackwood, NJ) for outstanding leadership on and off the performance floor.  Earning InterNational Grand Champions titles were:

  • Dance: AberdeenHigh School (Aberdeen, MD), Large Varsity Hip Hop division;
  • Rec Cheer: Everglades Cheer (Miami, FL), Junior Rec Mount Show division;
  • School Cheer: MonroeTownshipHigh School (Old Bridge, NJ), Large Varsity Mount Show division: and,
  • All Star Cheer: Rams All Stars (Hackensack, NJ), Junior Level 3 division.

Winding down the competition weekend, AmeriCheer held a private party for InterNationals competitors, their coaches, and families at Disney Hollywood Studios.  They, along with staff, enjoyed a live DJ, the Parade of Champions, and watched two teams take home the Spirited Program of the Year, sponsored by Inside Cheerleading.  “Our Spirited Program of the Year award is a tradition we hold close to our hearts because it not only awards athletes for their spirit and good sportsmanship, it awards their entire organization, from coaches to athletes to families, for their enthusiasm at our event.” Rossetti explained.

As 20 years of InterNationals came to a close, Rossetti reflected, “Every year I look forward to this event.  I get to meet new athletes and coaches and reminisce with long-time programs.  I can’t believe 20 years has gone by – I am looking forward to continuing memories and magic with these wonderful programs for the next 20 years!”

AmeriCheer has announced that its 21st InterNational Championship will be held March 21-22, 2015 at Walt Disney World® Resort.  For more information on the AmeriCheer & AmeriDance InterNational Championship or to view the 2014 Championship results, visit AmeriCheer.com or AmeriDanceInc.com.
